University of Maryland Medical Center Opens New Transplant Center

January 29, 2018

Transplant Center ribbon cuttingOn Tuesday, Jan. 23, the University of Maryland Medical Center celebrated the opening of the 5,200 square-foot comprehensive Transplant Center that ushers in a new era of seamless, high-quality, patient-centered care. The Transplant Center consolidates clinical and administrative services for liver, kidney, lung, heart and pancreas transplant patients, which were previously housed at several locations across the Medical Center campus. Patients can now access nearly all of their medical needs at one location. With more than 500 transplants performed every year, patient comfort and staff efficiency are paramount in the design and concept of this innovative Transplant Center.

“Improving the quality of life for patients is the organizing principle for the design of our new comprehensive Transplant Center. This state-of-the-art facility addresses the needs of our patients, as well as those of our expert transplant staff. The clinical areas have been designed to encourage and facilitate patient-centered, comfortable care,” said Stephen T. Bartlett, MD, the Peter Angelos Distinguished Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief medical officer, executive vice president and surgeon-in-chief for the University of Maryland Medical System.

The University of Maryland Medical Center has a proud history of pioneering some of the greatest advancements in transplant medicine. The Division of Transplantation includes a critical mass of investigators and internationally recognized physician-scientists focused on combining clinical care innovations and basic science research to support cutting-edge treatments and therapies for patients with complex organ failure.

Examination roomThe new Transplant Center includes 12 state-of-the-art examination rooms and four patient and family consultation rooms that were built for optimum patient privacy and productivity to improve quality of care and patient outcomes. Additionally, there is one infusion room, a patient and family education and wellness center with integrated technology for medical education programs, infusion therapy and phlebotomy services, a team room, and a comfortable patient and family waiting room with a complimentary coffee and water station that offers a healing and functional space where patients and families can relax.

The new center accommodates more patient visits, additional clinical trial opportunities, and a robust continuum of care. The patient and family education and wellness center focuses on collaboration and medical education by hosting transplant team meetings and case presentations to medical students, residents and other trainees. It also doubles as an innovative patient-education hub where staff can educate organ donors and potential organ donors, and transplant recipients on their care.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Transplant Center’s ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony. We are sincerely grateful to our philanthropic partners for supporting this important project, which enables us to invest in these new opportunities that ultimately improve the lives of our patients.
